The Artist

Wesley Ting-Wei Lin

Good day, everyone. My name is Wesley Ting-Wei Lin, and I am delighted to welcome you to the Unique Landscapes of Taiwan exhibition. This marks my third collaboration with WAMCI, following my contributions to The 2022 Season One Taiwan Series – Taiwan Tea Culture and The Native Taiwan Exhibition – Taiwanese Endemic Butterflies. It is truly a privilege to have the opportunity to once again showcase the beauty and cultural richness of Taiwan in the “Taiwan Geological Landscapes Exhibition.” When you think of Taiwan, what images come to mind? Perhaps it is the striking silhouette of Taipei 101, the vibrant atmosphere of Shilin Night Market, or, for butterfly enthusiasts like myself, the remarkable diversity of butterflies — with over 400 species found on the island. However, Taiwan’s beauty extends far beyond its urban landmarks and wildlife. Its natural landscapes are equally captivating, from the dramatic marble cliffs of Taroko Gorge to the misty forests of Alishan and the volcanic terrain of Yangmingshan. These distinctive environments offer a profound sense of wonder for nature lovers and adventurers alike. Among Taiwan’s many iconic natural features, Mount Yushan holds a special place. As the island’s highest peak and a defining feature of the Central Mountain Range, it represents the raw, untamed splendour of Taiwan’s wilderness. While illustrating the North Peak of Yushan, I was struck by the powerful juxtaposition of weathered, jagged peaks set against the lush, forested lower slopes. The unique climate of this region fosters an extraordinary level of biodiversity, making it one of Taiwan’s most ecologically rich areas. It is my hope that this exhibition will provide you with a deeper appreciation for Taiwan’s diverse landscapes. By the time you have explored the collection, I trust you will leave with fresh perspectives on the island’s natural beauty. Perhaps, you may even be inspired to embark on a journey of your own to experience Taiwan’s wonders firsthand — and create your own unforgettable Formosan memories. Thank you for visiting the exhibition, and I hope you enjoy it.
